NIGHT OF THE IGUANA

The story is set in a run-down Mexican tourist hotel in 1940. The Rev. T. Lawrence Shannon, defrocked for “heresy and fornication .. not in that order”, leads bus tours through “God’s landscape.” Suffering from fever, nervous exhaustion and threats from his angry bus load of teachers from a Baptist Women’s College in Blowing Rock, Texas, he retreats to his old friend Maxine, the brassy, recently widowed, manager of the hotel.

Soon after arriving he meets Hannah Jelkes, a New England spinster who travels the world with her 97-year-old philosopher-poet grandfather. All are at the end of their rope, like the iguana, captured by Maxine’s Mexican cabana boys. Add a couple of vacationing Germans, the frustrated leader of the group of female teachers and a recently Shannon-seduced teenager, and you have an exciting, often very funny, and moving Williams classic.
